Jaguar Land Rover commemorates two years net zero carbon footprint

Achieving carbon neutral operations

To meet international models for carbon neutrality (known as PAS 2060), JLR made £23 million available to finance energy-saving measures. This included installing efficient LED lighting, integrating solar panels for renewable electricity generation and implementing computer-controlled building management to optimise heat and energy loss. Other techniques have focussed on cutting the energy requirements for vehicle assembly. JLR contributes no waste directly to landfill and has slashed its water consumption during assembly by 23% per vehicle.

The UK sites involved form 77% of the brand’s global production capabilities. Internationally, JLR invested in voluntary carbon offset programs, backing projects in Kenya, Uganda, India and Ghana, to name a few.

According to JLR’s Responsible Business Director, Chris Throp, these efforts have taken a decade to come to fruition.

“A decade of innovations has enabled us to achieve carbon neutral status, and to be certified two years in a row reflects the hard work and dedication of the entire business. But we’re not stopping here – we will continue to drive forward projects across our business to help us close the loop on precious resources”, Mr Thorp explained.

The carbon-neutral celebration tour

As a celebration of this pioneering accomplishment, a Jaguar I-PACE electric all-wheel drive SUV travelled to each of the historic manufacturer’s sites. The 142-mile trip created zero-emissions and took the vehicle from the Gaydon engineering centre (where it was first charged using solar-panels) to the headquarters at Whitley, then onwards to the Solihull factory before culminating at the Engine Manufacturing Centre (EMC) based in Wolverhampton.

John Newton, a spokesperson for the Carbon Trust stated it was “great to see” JLR receive the accreditation and he was delighted that the company had continued to drive down emissions over the last twelve months.
